DUI Driver Crashes into Thrift Store

Between 5:30 and 6:00 PM on Saturday, July 4th, The Cherokee County Humane Society (CCHS) Thrift Store, which funds a variety of programs to help unwanted animals, was victimized by an alleged drunk driver. A young Hispanic man drove a stolen truck into the Thrift Store’s large plate glass and then tried to escape on foot, although was later captured by police. The Thrift Store is located at 5900 Bells Ferry Road in Acworth, Ga.
“Fortunately, the store had just closed for the holiday,” said Ottis Moore, director of operations, “because where the vehicle jumped the curb and landed inside the store is exactly where the children’s section is located with toys, clothing and shoes. If we had been open, I cannot even think of the possible results.
“We also had animals for adoption on the store, but none were injured. As it is we lost inventory, display shelves, shoes, clothing, and we will need to be closed several days. This lost revenue will likely impact our medical emergency funds, the spay/neuter clinics and the shot clinics we sponsor. Our programs are designed around the humane treatment of animals who continue to be turned in by the thousands at our counties’ shelters.”
The Cherokee County Humane Society has been supporting and helping animals in Cherokee and surrounding counties for over 30 years. In 2008, the CCHS adopted in excess of 800 spay and neutered animals, provided emergency medical care to over 100 pets and their owners, supported multiple vaccination-rabies clinics, took hundreds of animals from surrounding shelters into foster homes to reduce the millions of animals that are euthanized in shelters across the country every year.

It is estimated that nationwide taxpayers spend in excess of $2 billion paying for careless pet owners whose animals end up in shelters.
Donations are being accepted for thrift store losses, to rebuild our displays, or if you want to help with the animals.
Thank you for your support!
