Question:

How do I report suspected abuse or neglect of an animal?

Answer:

Please call the Cherokee County Marshal’s office at 678.493.6200. We urge you to report cruelty to or neglect of any animal to the marshal’s office as soon as it is discovered. It is beneficial to provide proof of the abuse or neglect by taking photos or videotape of the situation.  Examples of cruelty/neglect may include but are not limited to:

• Beating or physically abusing an animal

• Wiring or duct taping an animal's mouth closed

• Lack of adequate food, fresh water, warm shelter in the winter

• Lack of cool/shaded shelter in the summer

• Contaminated living area

• Keeping the animal on very short chain

• Not providing medical care for a sick animal

• Keeping an animal in a cage that is too small

• Intentional frequent breeding of an animal

Question:

I have lost my pet.  How do I begin looking for him?

Answer:

Please call the Cherokee County Animal Shelter at (770) 345-7270.  Their hours of operation are Monday - Saturday 10:00am - 5:30pm. You may also want to place an ad in local newspaper.  (Usually the ads for lost pets are free.) The Atlanta Journal Constitution (404) 577-5772, The Cherokee Tribune (770) 479-1441 and The Cherokee Ledger-News (770) 928-0706 run lost and found ads for free.

Question: 

I have found a dog or cat on my property.  What do I do?

Answer: 

You may call Cherokee County Animal Control at 678.493.6200 to come pick up the animal.  Or, you may contact the Cherokee County Animal Shelter at (770) 345-7270 to see if anyone has reported this pet missing.

Question:

What kind of programs does CCHS offer to assist in the cost of spaying or neutering an animal?

Answer:

The primary program for spay neuter assistance is our SNAP program.  Just complete and mail the application form.  This program is for financially qualified individuals only.  You may also access a list of low cost spay neuter programs in the Atlanta area at www.petorphans.com.

Question: 

I want to adopt a certain breed of dog or cat. I have checked the shelter, and there aren’t any available.  How can I find what I am looking for?

Answer:

You may visit www.petorphans.com for a list of rescue groups in the Atlanta area. Pet Orphans™ Referral is a referral organization located in the Atlanta, area that is working to help independent rescue groups find homes for their purebred and mixed breed orphaned family dogs and cats.

Question:

I have collected items or donations that I would like to present to The Cherokee County Humane Society. Who should I contact?

Answer:

Please email CCHS,  or leave a voice message on the CCHS voice mail at (770) 928-5115.  We will coordinate with you on collecting the items or donations.

Question:

How do I volunteer to help with projects through CCHS?

Answer:

The success of our programs depends on our volunteers. CCHS could not implement or execute many of its programs without dedicated volunteers.  We currently need help with offsite adoptions and the SNAP program, or you may contact the Cherokee County Animal Shelter at (770) 345-7270 if you wish to be of assistance at the shelter. The shelter’s hours of operation are Monday - Saturday 10:00am - 5:30pm. We will also be glad to add your name to our volunteer database and contact you in the future as we are continually adding new programs. Click here to print and mail our volunteer form.

Question:

I would like to donate supplies to the shelter.  What do they need?

Answer:

The Animal Shelter staff requests the following items if you are interested in helping out:

• Blankets
• Towels
• Paper Towels
• Animal Shampoo
• Newspapers
• Pet Food
• Cleaning Products (Bleach, Lysol, Window Cleaner, etc.)
• Carpet Squares (samples, remnants)
• Cat Litter
• Pet Carriers
• Trash bags
• Coffee (for the staff!)

Items can be left by the front door. If you would like to bring them during office hours, the shelter is open Monday - Saturday 10:00am - 5:30pm. For more information, please call the shelter at (770) 345-7270.

Question:

What kind of duties would I have as a shelter volunteer?

Answer:

DAILY:  Clean cages, wash bowls, do laundry, sweep and mop offices, empty trash, clean bathrooms & breakroom.

WEEKLY:  Unfold newspapers, clean pet carriers, clean outside pens, pick up yard waste, wash windows, wash vehicles, clean air filters and air exchange systems, work on special projects.

TRAINED VOLUNTEERS ONLY: Assemble adoption packs, office duties, assist customers with animals, grooming.
